Microsoft partners with YES to offer 50,000 certifications to South Africa’s youth
March 2025, Johannesburg
An exciting new partnership between the Youth Employment Service (YES) and Microsoft South Africa will provide 50,000 young South Africans with free certification vouchers in high-demand IT skills over the next year. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to equip the next generation with critical AI, cybersecurity, and digital skills, ensuring they are ready for high-demand jobs in the global digital economy.
Lillian Barnard, President for Microsoft Africa says, “this partnership marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to empower the youth of South Africa and create a brighter future for all. South Africa’s young population is in a great position to lead with AI-driven solutions, but having relevant AI and cybersecurity skills is crucial to this endeavour”.
This latest collaboration builds on YES and Microsoft’s existing partnership aimed at upskilling youth, preparing them to enter high-demand fields including AI engineering, data science, cybersecurity, cloud solutions, and full-stack development.
In addition to self-study resources, participants will receive instructor-led training, hands-on workshops, industry insights, and networking opportunities.
After an MOU was signed at our YES Hub in Alex, the partnership was officially announced on March 7, with key private sector stakeholders and government executives in attendance. In his address, President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted the vital role of YES in this collaboration, emphasising the programme’s impact in shaping a new generation of tech and software entrepreneurs through quality work experience.
This initiative underscores Microsoft’s and YES ongoing dedication to fostering economic growth and innovation in South Africa by empowering youth with the tools to succeed.
Ravi Naidoo, CEO of YES says, “This partnership with Microsoft is a testament to our unwavering commitment to empowering the lives of young people in South Africa. By providing these certifications and opportunities, we are not only enhancing their professional qualifications but also paving the way for a more prosperous and inclusive future."
